The Maize bean militant
By Sonia Moumen
In Béarn, there are people who are battling to save the maize bean. Didier Arramon is one of them. Apart from the sunflower crop that he delivers to the local cooperative, on a few acres of land he grows those magnificent plump white beans so beloved of gourmets. In this way, he also ensures the promotion of this traditional Béarnaise crop, and its cultivation method which was in danger of dying out, and when the harvest is almost ready, he has no hesitation in travelling the region’s roads to let people know that the crop will soon be ready, usually two or three weeks in September.
