The Vienne is currently the No. 1 French departement when it comes to producing melons in France.
Melon producers obtained official European recognition for the first time in 1998. Since then, the Haut-Poitou has a Protected Geographical Indication (P.G.I.). The Haut-Poitou melon is produced in a strictly demarcated geographical area, on plots of land that have been rigorously selected. These clay-limestone soils have water reserves and heat up slowly, thus ensuring the plant’s growth. The producers’ savoir-faire help grow melons that have a strong identity.
