La Moutarde Violette de Brive is a traditional mustard speciality from the city of Brive. Indeed, it was in the 13th century that Pope Clement VI, a native of the Brive region, asked a Corrèze mustard producer to come to Avignon to bring him some Moutarde Violette. It was not until the 1980s that this mustard came back into fashion, thanks to the Brive-based distiller, Denoix.
What’s special about this mustard, is that it is made from black grapes must that has been long ground with mustard seeds giving it a distinctive purple colour.
