Unveiled by Amédée Frézier upon his return from the new continent, strawberries are now the darling of the Lot-et-Garonne, France’s leading strawberry producing departement. With its red skin, delicious flavour and tangy taste, it’s naturally an indulgent fruit.
In April 2009, the Lot-et-Garonne’s fruit and vegetable association AIFLG obtained the Label Rouge quality mark for the Gariguette and Ciflorette strawberry varieties. It guarantees a high-quality product for consumers that abide by controlled specifications. Two varieties are concerned: Gariguette: Well known by consumers for its elongated shape and tangy flavours, it accounts for 45% of the volumes produced in the Lot-et-Garonne. You can find it on the market stalls from mid-March right up until the end of June. Ciflorette: The little newcomer with a wild strawberry taste is starting to gain a following amongst those who love very sweet, juicy fruit. A mid-season variety, it is ready to eat as of mid-April. The Charlotte variety, the newest arrival to the group, joined the ranks of Label Rouge strawberries in 2010. it’s a strawberry that is very fragrant (tasting of wild strawberries). The Charlotte strawberry is delicious and very sweet!
