Widely available in the Basque Country, even in supermarkets.
An alcoholic drink which is enjoyed on both sides of the France/Spain border, patxaran (pronounced Pacharan) is special because of its sweetness. Made using wild sloe berries, which were also formerly used as a fortifier and diuretic, patxaran does not exceed 25%. With a historic production, it is now home-made by a few producers who get their supplies from local markets. However, the vast majority of production is done directly by distilleries located mainly in Navarre and the Basque Country. Do not be fooled by its sweetness and similarity to a dessert wine. Enjoy responsibly.
